Brendon Pack | Am I Exempt From Federal Withholding? Do I Still Get a Refund?

Starting in January 2020, there’s a new design for Form W-4. The IRS explained that the redesign will reduce confusion for filers and enhance the transparency of the tax withholding system. Luckily, current employees who have completed a W-4 before 2020 do not need to fill out a new one.   Form W-4 is an IRS tax form completed by an employee to indicate their current tax situation. You usually complete a Form W-4 when you start a new job or your financial situation changes. This form helps you estimate your total income and the total amount of your deductions and certain tax credits to let your employer know how much federal income tax to withhold from each paycheck.   According to the IRS, if you had no income tax liability last year and expect the same for this year, you can claim exemption from income tax — but not Social Security or Medicare tax — withholding. But what does this exemption mean, and how do you know if you qualify?   Find Out: What Ar...

You were probably super nervous! Most rideshare drivers had never been behind the wheel as a taxi driver, so shuttling around a stranger was pretty out of the ordinary. Brendon Pack   I remember worrying about: should I talk? Should I play music? What kind of music?   Many of us still remember how we felt that first day of rideshare driving – but little did we know, something even more confusing was around the corner… taxes!   Come tax time, we may ...

Brendon Pack | No matter how long the US government is shutdown, Americans should still file their taxes ASAP

Despite a potential tax refund delay in the event of a prolonged partial government shutdown, you should still file your taxes as soon as possible, accountants told Business Insider.     Filing early will secure a spot for when refunds are issued, but those who typically use their refund for budgeting may need to plan further ahead.     When filing taxes, American taxpayers should file electronically and request direct deposit. Tax season got a little more challenging due to the partial government shutdown.   The Wall Street Journal's Richard Rubin reported this week that taxpayers who file early in the season may not receive their funds in a timely manner as the IRS is operating with about 12% of its employees. Brendon Pack   But that doesn't mean taxpayers should delay filing their taxes, according to accountants.   "File early as you normally would and at least secure a place in line for when ref...
